BLACK CANYON CITY – Summer is here, and with it comes Black Canyon City Library’s Summer Reading Program! This year the theme is “Libraries Rock!” and each Saturday at 12 p.m. in June and July the library will be bringing in performers both entertaining and educational.
“BCC Rocks” will start things off on June 2 with rock painting, then local “bee-thusiast” Barrie Dickerson with B’s Bees will educate everyone on our incredible insect friends on June 9. T-shirt Painting will follow on June 16, then singing, dancing and costumes with Disney’s Belle (that’s right, THE Belle!) from “Practically Perfect Princesses” on June 23 – though it’s not just for girls! Princes will have a great time too!
Finally, we have the interactive musical fun of “Sticks and Tones” on June 30, though keep in mind that they will begin performing at 10:30 a.m. instead of noon. All events are free and while participation in the reading contest is certainly encouraged, children do not have to register to attend. But it is a great way to keep the kids reading during summer and there are fun prizes to be won.
There’s also an Adults Only raffle and an online program at bcc.azsummerreading.org to track books and play games for all ages.
On Saturday, June 2 at 10:30 a.m. the library will host a training by Sonoran Prevention Works and Yavapai County Community Health Services about administering naloxone, an opioid anti-overdose drug, to help combat the opioid crisis. Attendance is free and strongly encouraged.
On Wednesday, June 13, at 2 p.m. local computer whisperer Scott Quillen returns for another “Tech Time,” and this time he is giving the low-down on tablets. If you are using your fancy new tablet as a paperweight, you might want to check it out and get the most out of your device.
For the kids they will be starting a summer “Game Time” on Friday, June 15, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., where Wii and board games will be on tap. Then “Guts and Glory” on Friday, June 29 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., for blind-folded taste tests and “what is my hand in?” challenges!
On top of all that, regular programs like “Relax’n’Craft” and “Beginners Yoga” will be continue through the summer. This includes “Movie Night” on Thursday, June 21 at 4 p.m., with a showing of the new Star Wars movie, “The Last Jedi,” on the little-big screen. If you didn’t catch it in the theater, you can watch it in comfort with free popcorn and soda.
Last but not least, “Teen Hangout” is on Friday, June 22, 5-7 p.m.
