CAREFREE – The Carefree Mayor, Les Peterson, has announced his bid for re-election in the town’s upcoming primary elections this August.

If he is re-elected in the general elections this November, his second term as mayor would run through December 1, 2020.

Peterson was appointed as Carefree’ s interim mayor in the spring of 2015, when Mayor David Schwan stepped down due to health issues and then later passed away.

After Schwan passed away, Peterson, who was vice mayor at the time, continued to fulfill the mayor’s duties.

In 2016 Peterson sought the mayoral seat and ran in the general elections unopposed becoming Carefree’s mayor-elect that August.

He won 100 percent of the vote in the 2016 Carefree mayoral elections, according the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office.

Peterson has a clear vision and is a hoping to continue his work of enhancing the quality of life for all of Carefree’s residents, according to his campaign website.

“Under Mayor Peterson’s leadership, great progress has been made developing and establishing a new financial business model for the Town, while maintaining the high quality of life which Carefree residents treasure,” stated Peterson’s website.

Some of the major accomplishments Peterson achieved as mayor leadership were initiating the renovations of the Bashas’, Spanish Village and the CIVANA resort.

The town council also purchased the property on 33 Easy Street and made it the official town council chambers. Carefree had been leasing their council chambers in the post office building for years prior to purchasing the Easy Street property.

The town also partnered with the Arizona Department of Transportation and the Maricopa Association of Governments to install bike lanes increasing safety on the major roads in town for pedestrian, cyclists and drivers.

“But, there is much still remaining to be accomplished to achieve our objective of high quality of life for all Carefree residents,” stated his website.

These are the major goals Mayor Peterson has listed as part of his campaign:

  • Strengthening infrastructure, including the water system, road repairs and improvements.
  • Generating additional sales tax revenues through economic development activities attracting new business.
  • Water project development – incorporating all Carefree residents into the Carefree Water Company.

Carefree’s primary elections are on August 28, 2018, and you must register by July 30. The general elections are on November 6, 2018.
