Local missing man found dead at Lake Pleasant

LAKE PLEASANT – The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) found the body of a missing Peoria man at Lake Pleasant on the evening of July 6 near Castle Creek and French Creek roads.

Citizens called MCSO after discovering a body that has been identified as 34-year-old Joseph Casey, who went missing on the north end of Lake Pleasant on June 21, 2018. The cause of death has not yet been determined.

“The suspicious circumstances surrounding his disappearance is still under investigation,” Sergeant Calbert Gillett said in a press release on July 9.

Casey was last seen getting into a dark-colored vehicle after his Jeep Wrangler broke down in a desert area of Lake Pleasant. Authorities believe he was trying to get a ride out of the desert to get help, but he was never seen again.

His family and friends quickly became concerned about Casey, who is a Navy veteran, and organized search parties looking for Casey or any clues that would lead them to his whereabouts. His family suspects foul play and believed he had the skills necessary to get out of the desert alive.

The investigation is still ongoing.
