PEORIA – Last night the Peoria City Council approved the appointment of Vanessa Hickman as the new city attorney. Hickman will be replacing Steve Burg who is retiring as Peoria’s city attorney effective July 6, 2018.
“Ms. Hickman has dedicated her career to identifying and implementing practical solutions to the difficult demands of Arizona law,” said Mayor Cathy Carlat. “I am pleased to welcome Ms. Hickman to our executive team as a Charter Officer of the City of Peoria.”
Hickman will be the chief legal adviser for the city of Peoria, representing the city in legal proceedings and overseeing the city’s legal team.
“I am honored and grateful to have been selected by the Mayor and council to head up the Peoria City Attorney’s Office,” said Hickman. “I have big shoes to fill with Steve’s departure and am thankful to have such quality attorneys and staff to assist in this effort.”
Burg has been the chief assistant city attorney and city attorney for the city of Peoria for the last 18 years, advising city councilmembers and leaders on municipal, state and federal law as well as managing personnel, budget, technology, and facilities.
“While it is bittersweet to see Steve retire after many years of dedicated service to the city, I’m happy to welcome Vanessa to Peoria,” said Peoria City Manager Jeff Tyne. “Her extensive legal expertise in government and land issues makes her an ideal choice for the city attorney position.”
Hickman has 15 years of legal experience.
