Peoria teen arrested at school with gun in backpack

PEORIA – A 16-year-old male student was arrested on gun charges at Centennial High School on the morning of August 19, after a 9 mm handgun with 11 rounds in the magazine was allegedly found in his backpack.

School administrators say that the teen was brought into the office after he was caught smoking “marijuana wax” in the bathroom and told school officials that there was a gun in his backpack. However, he did not make threats towards the school or others.

The school resource officer was immediately notified, who located the gun and took the student into custody without incident. He was later transported to the Durango Juvenile Detention Center, according to Peoria Police.

“The student stated he was holding the gun for another person; however, he could not provide any information to whom that person was,” stated a press release from Peoria Police Department (PPD).

The Peoria Unified School District was notified of the incident and police ensured the district that ther was no danger to the Centennial campus.

“These matters are extremely serious in nature, cause disruption of an educational institution and are not tolerated by the Peoria Unified School District or the PPD,” stated the press release.

The suspect was booked on a charge of carrying a weapon on school grounds and drug charges. The PPD is encouraging anyone with information about this incident to contact Peoria Police.
