Drink beer for wildlife

Mother Road Brewing’s limited-edition cans of Conserve and Protect Kӧlsch helps with Arizona wildlife conservation

By TARA ALATORRE

FLAGSTAFF – A new collaboration between the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) and Mother Road Brewing Company will have craft beer lovers, outdoor enthusiasts and conservationists all sipping for a cause with the recent release of Conserve and Protect Kӧlsch.

The light, approachable, German-style beer will be available statewide now through the fall, and for every limited-edition can sold proceeds will be donated to AZGFD. The funds raised from the Conserve and Protect Kölsch, which features special can artwork depicting fly-fishing at Lee’s Ferry, will help promote wildlife conservation and outdoor recreation.

“Assisting with wildlife and habitat conservation in Arizona is a natural fit for Mother Road as it dovetails with our mission of ‘building community one pint at a time’,” said Mother Road CEO, Michael Marquess. “A portion of the proceeds from the sales of Conserve and Protect cans will be donated to AZGFD to support its critical on-the-ground conservation work.”

The special cans also feature special pairing recommendations from the Flagstaff-based brewery for how to best enjoy the beer, which align with this innovative fundraising and awareness campaign.

“Best enjoyed pulled from a cold river, straight from the can,” states the can’s label.  “Pairs with fresh air, good company and wild caught fish.”

The Kӧlsch is the same recipe that Mother Road distributes across Arizona, and it is inspired by the winding “Gold Road” stretch of Route 66. It’s a “perfect all-occasion beer” that is crisp, with a deep champagne color, orchard-like aromas, and a dry, mild biscuit malt finish, according to the brewery’s website.

“We want all Arizonans to know about the agency’s efforts to conserve and protect 800-plus wildlife species in the state,” said Ty Gray, director of AZGFD. “With Mother Road’s launch of Conserve and Protect Kӧlsch, we’re talking to a new audience that cares about sustainability, enjoys the outdoors and wants to contribute to wildlife conservation.”

The public also is invited to share their love of Arizona wildlife and support of the collaboration by tagging photos with #cheerstoAZwildlife.

In addition to supporting this unique collaboration, the public can contribute directly to Arizona’s wildlife by becoming a Conservation Member at azwildlifehero.com/join.
