HIKING/OUTDOORS
Women’s shooting class offered
The Arizona Women’s Shooting Association is offering a course giving instruction on basic knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for owning and using a pistol safely from 6 – 10 p.m. Aug. 19 – 20 at Ben Avery Shooting Facility.
Students will learn about pistol parts and operation, ammunition, gun safety, and shooting fundamentals. The eight-hour course concludes with a written exam. Students successfully completing the course will receive an NRA certificate.
Cost for the class is $100. Ben Avery Shooting Facility is located at 4044 W. Black Canyon Blvd. in Phoenix.

Host of activities set for Cave Creek Park
Cave Creek Regional Park has a variety of hikes and other activities
available to the public throughout the month of July. Listed below
are some of the events available for the remainder of the month. For
a preview of August events go to www.maricopa.gov/parks/cavecreek/
Thursday- At 7 a.m. a three-mile hike will begin at the Nature Center.
Those interested are asked to wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of
water.
Saturday- Beginning at 8 a.m., Sonoran Desert 101, a 1-mile interpretive
hike focusing on the desert’s plants and animals will leave from the
Nature Center. The focus will be on the adaptations that have allowed
the species native to the desert to thrive in the harsh climate.
POLITICS
New River hosts bevy of candidates
The New River/Desert Hills Community Association (NR/DHCA) will be
hosting its biennial “Meet Your Candidates” political forum from 7
– 9 p.m. on Aug. 10 at the Crossroads Christian Fellowship Church
located at 42425 N. New River Road.
Candidates running for Arizona Governor, US Congressional District
3, and Legislative District 6 have been invited to attend. The event
provides the public with a chance to listen to and ask questions about
the issues that matter most to them.

State Senator pays monthly visit to Anthem
State Senator David Braswell, who represents District 6, will be at
the North Valley Regional Library, on the campus of Boulder Creek
High School, at 1 p.m. Aug. 6 for his monthly question and answer
sessions which are open to the public.
The sessions, in which Braswell discusses what’s going on at the state
level, are scheduled for the first Friday of each month, generally
running from 90 minutes up to two hours.
MUSIC
El Pedregal hosts 4 August performances
Kurt Hunter will perform songs from his new album, “Up Too Late”
with four shows during a seven day stretch from Aug. 22-28 at El Pedregal
in Scottsdale.
The Louisiana native, who has been playing since he was 13, has a
style that was influenced by southern rock and blues.
Formerly a member of the band “The Young Americans” Hunter will perform
from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Aug. 22, and then from 9:30 – 12:30 p.m. Aug.
24, 26th and 28th.

MIM celebrates jazz
“A Jazz Celebration” presents the Marty Ashby Trio with guest appearances
by local jazz artists from around the state at 7:30 p.m., Aug. 7.
Marty Ashby was asked to serve as the MIM jazz program consultant
based on his wealth of knowledge; proven track record in presenting,
producing, and performing; and more than 25 years of relationships
with the top names in the field. Ashby [www.martyashby.com] will kick
off the celebration with his Pittsburgh trio which includes: drummer
Roger Humphries [www.rogerhumphries.com] best known for his work with
Horace Silver and Ray Charles, and bassist Dwayne Dolphin [www.dwaynedolphinmusic.com]
who started his career playing in bands lead by Wynton Marsalis and
Stanley Turrentine. Ashby, executive producer for MCG Jazz [www.mcgjazz.org],
is an accomplished guitarist and has produced four GRAMMY® Award-winning
albums.
Local artists Ryan Haines, Paul Eirik Melhus, Michael Kocour, Fred
Forney, Dennis Rowland also will perform.

DANCE
Junior class offered
The National League of Junior Cotillions offers dance instruction
to boys and girls in sixth through eight grade beginning Sept. 14.
The five instructional classes teach the basic steps of Waltz, Fox
Trot, Cha Cha, Swing, Tango and line dancing. The five instructional
classes are Sept. 14, Oct. 19, Nov. 16, Jan. 11 and Feb. 8. Classes
are 6:30 – 8 p.m.
Classes will be at Moon Valley Country Club, located at 151 W. Moon
Valley Drive in Phoenix.
THEATER
On The Towne offers summer camp
On The Towne Community Theatre will conduct their next two-week camp
from 1 – 5 p.m. Aug. 2 – 13. Children will learn the songs, dances
and wear the costumes from the different eras of rock. Our performance
will include songs from Elvis, the Beatles, Kiss, Joan Jett, Britney
Spears and others. The camp will close with a performance at the Boulder
Creek High School Mini Theater on the last day. Suggestions for simple
costumes will be provided. The camp is open to all children ages 6
to 14.
Cost for the camp is $200 with a 25 percent discount available for

On The Towne auditions for latest production
On The Towne’s production of Agrabah, City of Enchantment, an adaptation
of the Disney hit Aladdin, gets under way with classes on Aug. 24
at Canyon Springs School in Anthem.
The no-cut, 36 hour program is designed for children ages 6 – 14.
Children will learn aspects of theater including, but not limited
to, vocalization, dance, character development, stage presence, self
and group discipline and theatrical protocol.
Children will dance and sing to the tuneful, Academy award-winning
score that includes songs like “A Whole New World” and “Friend Like
Me”. There are many parts for both boys and girls.
Cost is $200 per child with a 25 percent sibling discounts available.
Classes start Aug. 24th and are from 4 – 6 p.m. Tuesdays - Thursdays,
at Canyon Springs School. Performances are Oct. 1st and 2nd at Cross
of Christ School.

Musical Theatre of Anthem (MTA) will audition for “Jungle Book Kids”
and “Once on this Island Jr.” at 11 a.m. Aug. 21.
Both are no-cut productions for Jr. MTA Performers (ages 6-14) that
requires a $225 tuition fee for participation. Performers will get
to choose which show they would like to audition for, or they can
audition for both and let the directors choose. Rehearsals will take
place at the Caepe School, 42212 North 41st Drive in Anthem.
The jungle is jumpin' with jazz in the exciting Disney classic, Jungle
Book Kids! This musical includes all your favorite Disney tunes, like
"The Bare Necessities," and "I Wanna Be Like You.”
Once on this Island Jr. is a highly original and theatrical Caribbean
adaptation of the popular fairy tale "The Little Mermaid."
It garnered eight Tony nominations for its Broadway run, including
Best Musical, Book and Score. In almost non-stop song and dance, the
show tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues and falls
in love with Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of her island.

Following auditions at 11 a.m. on Aug. 21 the dance call will be at
5 p.m. Aug. 22.

Performances for Once on this Island Jr. will be on October 28th-31st
and Jungle Book Kids will be Nov. 4 - 7, both at Boulder Creek’s Mini
Auditorium in Anthem.
Those auditioning should bring a musical theatre song, 16-32 bars
or one minute in length. They also need to bring an accompaniment
CD or tape to sing with and have their registration materials (available
on the website) completed prior to coming to the audition.

Cave Creek galleries host evening event
The latest “Art Night in Cave Creek” is set for 6 – 9 p.m. Aug. 13
in downtown Cave Creek.
Sponsored by the Cave Creek Gallery Association the event will include
new displays at Galeria Bellas Artes, D. Lyon Art Gallery, Steven
DeWitt Perrin Gallery, and Level 9 Gallery.

Artist display features nature pieces
Kate Nolen will showcase a new art exhibit called ‘Elemental Intuition’
throughout the month of August at Studio C4 Gallery at Cave Creek
Coffee Company. Utilizing materials from human ruins, unused artifacts
from old mining towns, non-productive farms, abandoned dwellings,
and natural media from various landscapes, her art is a reflection
of the loving connectivity between human beings and nature.
Nolen has been painting and taking photographs for eight years. She
often uses stones, wood, plants, leaves, shells, feathers, and petrified
wood; and creates paintings with the materials using acrylic paint
to create a colorful, harmonious abstraction.
A meet and greet with artist, Kate Nolen, will be held at the gallery
from 6 – 9 p.m. Aug. 14.

Daisy Mountain Rock group sets August meeting
The Daisy Mountain Rock and Mineral Club’s monthly meeting will be
from 6:45 – 8:15 p.m. Aug. 5 at North Valley Regional Library. Herb
Jacobson will describe the types of rocks that can be found around
the Daisy Mountain area. Sample rocks with GPS location coordinates
will be available for viewing. Those attending are welcome to bring
along any rock that they may have and want to be identified.
Round hounding club is for residents of the Daisy Mountain area including
New River, Desert Hills, Anthem, and Tramonto. North Valley Regional
Library is located at 40410 N. Gavalin Peak Parkway. The club hosts

Anthem business offers wine/beer tasting events
Wild Vines, located at 4111 N. Daisy Mountain Drive, is hosting a
beer tasting at 7 p.m. Thursday. The establishment also offers a wine
tasting event at 6 p.m. on Aug. 4.
Cost for the beer tasting event is $5. Cost for the wine tasting is
$10.

The seventh annual Uncorked and Unplugged to Benefit Boys and Girls
Clubs of Greater
Scottsdale is set for 6 p.m. – midnight Oct. 17 at Desert Ridge Marketplace,

The annual wine, food tasting event offers a variety of gourmet foods,
three stages of live entertainment and the opportunity to sample wines
and spirits from Diageo Chateau and Estates
Cost for the event is $125 per person. An executive badge, good for

Chronic pain support group meets along Carefree Highway
American Chronic Pain Association, a group designed to help people
in pain deal with their problems, has a local chapter that meets from
6 - 7:30 p.m. the first and third Tuesday of every month at Azools
Bar and Grill at 3134 W. Carefree Highway.
The North Phoenix group will cater toward veterans, but also is open
to the general public. There is no cost to attend the meetings. Utilizing
skills taught at ACPA meeting will allow members to become actively
involved in their own recovery. The support members receive at group
meeting will enable them to continue to make progress. ACPA groups
are meant to offer a support system to members, as well as teach skills,
which will enable members to cope with the day-to-day situations.

Paradise Valley reaches out to veterans
Paradise Valley Community College is offering a weekly support group
for combat veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) who
are experiencing the challenges of returning to civilian life and
college at 5 p.m. Thursdays on the Union Hills campus. The group is
facilitated by a counselor.
The purpose of the Veteran’s Club is to help veterans have a sense
of belonging and get involved in school through fundraising events
and community service. The Veteran’s Support Group will also help
them understand how to effectively deal with PSTD by providing information,
resources and rehabilitation methods.

A Fat to Fabulous Weight Loss Support Group is forming in Anthem.

PVCC offers class on designing iPhone applications
Paradise Valley Community College is offering an Apple iPhone application
development class beginning Fall 2010. CIS 298AC: Intro to Programming
iPhone Applications is a three-credit class from 5 – 7:30 p.m. on
Wednesdays beginning Aug. 25 at the Union Hills campus, 18401 N. 32nd
St. in Phoenix. Students must be familiar with the Macintosh platform
and some familiarity with programming is recommended.

and how to market their app.

Cave Creek Academy preps for 1st year
Cave Creek Academy, which will open in August, is looking for creative
youngsters ages 4.5 – 14 for their first year. The school, serving
K-8, plans on combining classical elements like Latin and logic, with
Montessori philosophy and SEM (Renzulli’s School Enrichment Model)
from the University of Connecticut. Renzulli’s system has allowed
many who had never qualified for a gifted program to excel, while
allowing gifted children to progress at their level of challenge.

Paradise Valley registers for Fall semester
Registration is underway for Fall 2010 classes at Paradise Valley
Community College.
PVCC offers hundreds of classes in 5- and 8-week formats for students
of all ages, from high school students entering their first year of
college to adults making a career change or taking classes to pursue
a new interest. Fall semester classes begin Aug. 21, at both the Union
Hills campus and PVCC at Black Mountain.
Tuition is $71 per credit for Maricopa County residents and $96 for
out-of-county residents. Fall tuition is due by July 6. After July
6, tuition is due the day of registration.
Classes may be taken on campus, online or as a hybrid of both. The
2010 class schedule can be picked up on campus or go to www.paradisevalley.edu/sc
