ANTHEM – In 2000, Anthem and the surrounding communities celebrated the opening of Safeway, the first grocery store in the area. Get ready to re-welcome Safeway to the neighborhood, as the store is set to return to its former location at 3655 W. Anthem Way.

The Albertsons Safeway Inc. corporation has officially confirmed that Safeway is reopening.

Nancy Keane, Albertsons Safeway Inc. Public Affairs and Government Relations representative, emailed The Foothills Focus a statement regarding the reopening on Sept. 19.

“Safeway is thrilled to announce its return to the beautiful Anthem community,” the statement reads. “While an exact opening date has yet to be determined, we look forward to providing an exceptional shopping experience to every resident of Anthem. It’s expected that about 100 new employees will be hired at Safeway in Anthem.”

According to the Albertsons Safeway Inc. statement, the new store will feature a full-service Starbucks and seating area, in addition to a designer floral showroom, and an exceptional produce department featuring fresh fruits and vegetables, including a variety of organic produce. A new butcher block with fine cut meat, poultry, and seafood is also planned.

“To date, an in-store bank has not been selected,” the statement concludes.

The Anthem Safeway was converted to a Haggen store in early summer of 2015, after an Albertsons/Safeway merger. Multiple stores operating under the Albertsons or Safeway corporations were then sold to Haggen, a Pacific northwest grocery chain that was aiming for a major expansion. Haggen’s expansion was short-lived, however, and the Anthem Haggen announced plans to close after being open for only three months.

After the closure of Haggen, the familiar Anthem storefront sat empty, and speculation grew on what might go in there. Signs posted on the former Safeway building for an application for a liquor license for Safeway #3334 sparked community interest, and Safeway has now confirmed what the application sign indicated.

No further details on the opening have yet been released; updates will be posted in future Foothills Focus articles.
