MCSO investigating two armed robberies in Anthem
ANTHEM – Two Anthem businesses were robbed last week. Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigating the cases; it’s not yet known if the robberies are connected.
Take-and-bake pizza restaurant Papa Murphy’s, located in the Anthem Marketplace plaza, was robbed by a suspect described as a white male teen on Wednesday, Aug. 31, at 9 p.m., according to MCSO.
“We believe an 18-year-old male wearing a blue bandana came in and took some cash from the safe and left in what’s described as a sports car in the direction of the freeway,” said MCSO Detective Doug Matteson.
Matteson said the robber was armed with a black handgun; the suspect gained entry into the building through an unlocked door just after closing. The robber took about $200 in cash.
On Sept. 1, Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa in the Anthem Crossroads plaza, was robbed at 10:30 p.m.
Matteson said the suspect in this robbery also looked like a teenager but was described as having light black skin, possibly Indian. This suspect was wearing a dark blue hoodie and black pants at the time of the robbery. The robber showed the Hand & Stone employee a small black handgun and got away with an unknown amount of cash. There is no description of this robber’s getaway vehicle.
Matteson said that at this time, investigators are not sure if the robberies are connected. While the suspects’ descriptions don’t match exactly, they are both described as teens, and both the handgun and the manner of the crimes match in description. The investigation into both crimes continues.
