Daisy Mountain Fire Department awarded hiring grant

Staff Report~ 8/27/2014

NORTH VALLEY – Over the past five years, the Daisy Mountain Fire District has seen over a million dollar reduction in tax-generated revenue as property values declined. Fire Chief Mark Nichols, along with elected Fire Board Officials, made critical cuts to programs and budgets in an effort to sustain staffing and service delivery for district taxpayers. In addition to the drastic decline in tax revenue, the District also lost five employees due to retirement.

In late 2013, Nichols under direction of the Daisy Mountain Fire Board applied for a Federal S.A.F.E.R. Grant to replace five firefighter positions lost to attrition. In early 2014, the Daisy Mountain Fire District was awarded a grant to not only hire five new firefighters but also pay to train them and sustain their salaries for two years.

On Aug. 8, five new firefighter recruits began their training at the Glendale Regional Public Safety Training Academy. Once the Recruits successfully complete a rigorous thirteen week training academy, they will be assigned to one of Daisy Mountain’s four stations.
