Harold’s Corral wants to hear from couples who met there

8/26/2015

CAVE CREEK – Over the past eight decades, one of the most frequent visitors to Harold’s Cave Creek Corral has been…Cupid. That’s right, Cupid’s arrow has struck many a cowboy, country dancer, artist, biker, hippie, musician, CEO, stockbroker, Steelers fan, and more at Harold’s on a fun night out, lazy afternoon, or even during breakfast. As Harold’s celebrates its 80th anniversary in September, the iconic restaurant and country western bar is seeking stories from couples who met there – even if they broke up.

Among the many celebratory events planned for Harold’s 80th anniversary is a “Love Corral” night on Saturday, Sept. 12, 8 p.m.-1 a.m. The restaurant recently extended its deadline for stories to Sunday, Sept. 6 – the night of its Hawaiian Luau – and the couple with the best story for the Sept. 12 “Love Corral” event will win an $80 gift certificate to Harold’s. Stories should be submitted to haroldscorral@gmail.com.

Harold’s co-owner Danny Piacquadio met his wife Meri at Harold’s. Meri, who was visiting from Pittsburgh, came to Harold’s with friends, and Piacquadio was working in the kitchen, but a co-worker convinced him to stop cooking and meet Meri and her friends. Cupid’s arrow struck hard, and the couple celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary this past year.

Cave Creek residents Sean Collins and his wife Tali met during Harold’s 75th anniversary party and were married in Ireland in 2013. Piacquadio and Harold’s co-owner Bill Vale introduced them at the party and were later invited to the wedding. Neither could attend and Collins couldn’t resist texting Piacquadio a photo from their Dublin hotel bar the night before the wedding.

“Ben Roethlisberger was staying there. He had been promoting the upcoming Steelers game in London and ended up at the same hotel bar as us, so I sent Danny a photo of us with Ben with a note saying, ‘Sorry you couldn’t make it – we had to fill your spot,’” Collins said, laughing.

For Brad and Jo Jo Berentson, of North Dakota, the timing was right to meet during Bike Week in April 2013. Neither lived in Arizona; both were on vacation when they ended up at Harold’s Corral. Brad saw Jo Jo, an Ontario resident, across the room but was too intimidated to ask her to dance, so he asked her friend to dance. He finally got his nerve up to talk to her and Cupid struck quickly – the couple was married just two months later in June 2013.

“Harold’s is still our favorite hangout when we’re in Arizona,” Brad said.

In addition to the Sept. 12 “Love Corral,” Harold’s is planning an Employee Reunion on Sept. 9, a History Dinner to benefit Cave Creek Museum on Sept. 15, a Cave Creek Elementary School Reunion on Sept. 17, a Steelers Party on Sept. 20, and the big Harold’s 80th Birthday Bash on Sept. 26 and Sept. 27.

During the month of September, those who dine at Harold’s can enter to win a gift certificate for $19.35 (drawn daily) and anyone 80 years or older can dine for free on Monday, Sept. 14, Sept. 21, and Sept. 28.

Harold’s Corral is located at 6895 E. Cave Creek Rd. in Cave Creek. For information, call (480) 488-1906 or visit www.haroldscorral.com.
