New MCSO helicopter named for Deputy William Coleman

ANTHEM – The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department has added a new helicopter to its fleet. The Bell 407 GX helicopter was shown at July 7 ceremony at Deer Valley Airport. This addition to the MCSO fleet honors Deputy William Coleman; MCSO noted in a release that the tail number on the unit memorializes Deputy Coleman, badge #977.

Deputy Coleman was killed in the line of duty in Anthem on Jan. 8, 2012. Memorials in Anthem have been set up in his memory, including a field at the Anthem Community Park that was named after him after the tragedy.

This new helicopter cost about $3.5 million. It is specifically equipped for search and rescue missions and has already seen airtime in rescue missions.

Deputy Coleman, a New River resident, was a longtime veteran of the MCSO force and served for almost 20 years.
