Wrong-way driver arrested on I-17

YAVAPAI COUNTY – A wrong-way driver was arrested on I-17 northbound, north of Black Canyon City, on June 21. No injuries were caused by the wrong-way driving, but the Arizona Department of Public Safety reported two non-injury collisions as a result of it.

DPS noted that 39-year-old Damian Ballesteros of Phoenix had traveled four miles in the wrong direction before being stopped near Black Canyon City. According to a DPS news release, after being stopped, Ballesteros said he was “confused” and had been talking on the phone while driving southbound in the northbound lanes on I-17.

A Yavapai County Sheriff’s officer attempted to stop the driver but was unable to. A DPS trooper responded to the call and was able to stop the driver by using a rolling traffic break.

Ballesteros was arrested and booked into the Yavapai County Jail on charges of Aggravated DUI, Super DUI, Extreme DUI, Criminal Open Container, Endangerment, and Driving on a suspended license.
