Merrill Gardens at Anthem on track to open this fall

Elizabeth Medora

ANTHEM – Construction at Merrill Gardens is moving swiftly, and the new retirement community is on schedule to open in fall 2016.

Krista Solomon, Merrill Gardens at Anthem General Manager, noted that every day brings new progress to the construction. The roof is now on the building, Wi-Fi cabling and ductwork are ongoing, and the electrical system is in.

Merrill Gardens will include 93 apartments, in studio, 1-bedroom, and 2-bedroom floor plans. Deposits are currently being taken for the apartments, and, already, over 40 percent of the apartments have been claimed.

“Anthem has been great and welcoming, and interest has been extremely high,” Solomon reported.

The Merrill Gardens leasing office, located at the construction site at 2800 West Rose Canyon Circle, is open seven days a week, during general business hours, and those interested in the new retirement community are welcome to drop in and see more about it. Pricing information, floor plans, and color palettes are available at the leasing office. You can also make an appointment with the leasing office by calling (623) 565-9887 or emailing The Merrill Gardens staff has also met with prospective residents in their homes, at Starbucks, and at other places that are convenient for the resident, Solomon said, saying that she is “happy to do that.”

The Merrill Gardens facility will include a swimming pool, outdoor dining room, tech room, library, activity room, beauty salon, and theater. Covered parking is offered for residents; transportation is provided for those who don’t have vehicles.

Merrill Gardens includes Anytime Dining, with the kitchen open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. daily.

“We serve a full menu all day,” Solomon said. This allows residents to eat on their own schedule, keeping a more homelike feel to the community, which Solomon said “is very important to us.” The building will also feature an open kitchen, and residents will be able to watch the chefs at work and interact with the staff.

Solomon reported that some of the residents who will be moving into Merrill Gardens currently live in Anthem. Others are parents of current North Valley residents, and they’re moving into Merrill Gardens for the opportunity to live closer to their children and grandchildren.

“We have several residents who are moving in from out of state because their children live here,” Solomon said.

Solomon noted that Merrill Gardens encourages residents’ families to participate in activities and special events, such as holiday parties and barbecues.

“We welcome families to come to the community,” she said.

As more residents sign up to join Merrill Gardens, the Merrill Gardens staff is holding monthly lunches at local restaurants to residents can meet and get to know each other. Solomon said at the last lunch, the excitement over the new building was growing and that the prospective residents wish Merrill Gardens could build faster!

The basic Merrill Gardens philosophy is that the residents’ lives should get bigger, not smaller, when they move into a retirement community. With this in mind, activities are encouraged both in the facility and within the North Valley community.

“It’s important for us that residents have the lifestyle that they want to have,” Solomon said.

Merrill Gardens will have independent living, assisted living, and memory care units. All the apartments are licensed so that if a resident’s health changes, they can get the level of care they need without having to move. All rooms have emergency pull cords, and a morning check-in is held for each resident.

“We really like the idea of licensing all of our units so residents don’t have to move,” Solomon said.

Starting in late summer, Merrill Gardens will begin hiring staff members for management positions, assisted living caregivers, wait staff, housekeeping, maintenance, cooks, and front desk personnel, with entry level to certified level positions available. Volunteers are also welcome. To apply for job opportunities, email resumes to Solomon,

As a 12-year employee of Merrill Gardens, Solomon is familiar with the Merrill Gardens’ community atmosphere, and she’s looking forward to welcoming new Merrill Gardens residents once the building opens.

“We’re happy to be a part of Anthem,” she said.
