Phoenix Police Chief Candidates Forum to be held June 6
PHOENIX – Residents interested in the Phoenix Police Chief hiring will have an opportunity to contribute to the selection process, first-hand, at a June 6 public forum for final-round candidates. Successful finalists for the chief position will participate in an open meeting that includes questions from the public.
“The chief of police is one of the most high-profile positions in the city and we’ve intentionally added this element to our recruitment so the public can continue to have a voice in our process,” said Ed Zuercher, Phoenix City Manager. “Since last fall we’ve asked members of the community to tell us what they want in the new leader of the Police Department and, as we prepare to make a final decision, we want to hear from the public again.”
Residents can ask questions and meet the chief finalists at a moderated public forum from 6 -7:30 p.m. Monday, June 6, in the Phoenix City Council Chambers, located at 200 W. Jefferson Street. During the forum, the candidates will have the opportunity to introduce themselves to the community and then answer as many questions as possible in a moderated setting.
There are three ways to submit a question:
- In advance: Send a question via email to firstname.lastname@example.org. Email questions will be accepted beginning Monday, May 23 until 5 p.m. Friday, June 3.
- In advance: Call (602) 261-8512 and leave your question in a voicemail beginning Monday, May 23 until 5 p.m. Friday, June 3.
- At the forum: Residents can attend the public forum and from 5 p.m. until the event begins at 6 p.m. they can submit a written question.
The questions will be reviewed and placed into categories by staff from the City Manager’s Office and Human Resources Department. Although the city cannot guarantee every question will be used at the forum, efforts will be made to focus on recurring topics or themes from the community that generate significant interest.
After the moderated forum, the public can meet the candidates at an informal gathering in the Phoenix City Hall Atrium, 200 W. Washington Street, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The moderated forum will be broadcast live on PHXTV on Cox Cable 11 and Century Link 8006, and online at phoenix.gov/phxtv. A rebroadcast of the forum can be seen on PHXTV and online at phoenix.gov/phxtv.
The city received 65 applications for the police chief position. Nine applicants were chosen as semi-finalists. The names of those who are advancing to the final selection process and will be participating in the public forum will be announced soon by the city.
