Second annual Deputy Coleman Memorial Run held in Anthem

ANTHEM – Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Sheriff Bill Coleman will always be remembered as someone who gave his life to protect the community. On May 4, the 2nd Annual Bill Coleman Memorial Run was held in his honor. MCSO Academy class #138 led the run, accompanied by local residents who wished to join them.

Coleman, who was a north valley resident, was shot and killed in the line of duty on Jan. 8, 2012, while responding to a burglary call in Anthem. He had served 20 years with MCSO and was highly respected throughout the community and by those with whom he served.

During the Deputy Coleman Memorial Run, the academy class ran 4.2 miles and completed 977 exercise repetitions in the Coleman Memorial Field at the Anthem Community Park. Multiple first-responder units, including MCSO helicopter #977, were on-site for the run. Coleman’s serial number was 977, and the helicopter was designated #977 in his honor.

The first memorial run in 2015 met with strong community support, and MCSO now plans to make it an academy tradition, honoring the memory of a local hero.
