Anthem’s Gavilan Peak Firebirds won both the girls and boys basketball
state championships earlier this month at Isaac Middle School in Phoenix,
site of the annual state middle school tournament.
The seventh and eighth graders from the school went a combined 31-1
on the girls and boys teams to earn a pair of state titles.
The girls completed a 16-0 season by turning the tables on Desert
Arroyo in the championship game. A year ago Desert Arroyo defeated
Gavilan Peak for the championship.
Hannah Nielsen, the high scorer for the tournament, earned Most Valuable
Player (MVP) honors for the event. She and Madison Wichmann led the
Firebirds in rebounding.
The boys team finished a 15-1 season by defeating Anthem Elementary
in the title game, as the Firebirds avenged their only loss of the
season in the finals.
Tyler Whiley led the way for Gavilan Peak, earning MVP honors. Other
key contributors were Kennedy McGrath and Logan Zotovich.
