Car strikes kills three pedestrians


FOUNTAIN HILLS –  On March 13, at approximately 9:30 a.m. the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office received several calls about a fatal traffic accident involving four pedestrians that were walking on the sidewalk near Saguaro and Palisades Boulevard.
The victims were walking northbound on the east sidewalk of Saguaro when they were struck by a 1998 gold Ford Explorer headed northbound on Saguaro towards Palisades Boulevard that was driven by 27-year-old Alex Bashaw, according to reports.
The victims have been identified as two married couples; Karen Bonta, age 71 and Robert Bonta, age 72; and Pattie Doornbos, age 60, and Ronald Doornbos, age 60. 
Karen and Pattie were pronounced dead on the scene.  Robert and Ronald were transported to a local hospital, where Robert was pronounced dead, according to MCSO.
Ronald sustained traumatic head injuries that required multiple surgeries and is currently in the intensive care unit in critical condition.
The couples did not know each other and both were visiting Arizona. The Bonta’s are from Iowa and the Doornbos are from Canada.
The driver stayed on the scene and showed no signs of impairment.  The investigation is ongoing, and charges are pending, according to MCSO.
