CCUSD adds public hearing on Desert Arroyo
Staff Report ~ 3/10/2010
A second public hearing has been added to give parents and other community
members a chance to address the Cave Creek Unified School District
Governing Board regarding the possible closure of Desert Arroyo Middle
School.
Initially Tuesday’s meeting was to be the only opportunity for the
public to speak, however due to parents concerns about not being given
enough notice a second meeting has been added at 6 p.m. April 13 in
the district’s Governing Board Room 33016 North 60th Street.
The potential closure, which is being considered for the second straight
year, came about as the district looks to be able to maintain as many
programs and teachers as possible, despite helping to offset a potential
$850,000 - $2 million reduction in the district’s school budget, which
won’t be determined until the State’s budget is adopted.
If the Governing Board decides to close Desert Arroyo Middle School,
the following grade configurations would occur: Fifth grade students
this year would remain at their elementary school for the sixth grade
year. Current Desert Arroyo Middle School students would be moved
to Sonoran Trails Middle School. All of the District’s elementary
schools and Sonoran Trails Middle School have the capacity to go to
a K-6 and 7-8 configuration.
Instead of voting on the issue at the April 13 meeting the District
intends to schedule a meeting to vote on the school closure on May
18. For additional information on the issue go to www.ccusd93.org.
