Peoria Elementary seeks contributions for scholarship, provides books for every student at upcoming book fair

PEORIA – Members of nine Peoria non-profits met for a kick-off meeting at Peoria Elementary School in support of a fundraising effort led by Peoria Elementary Library Paraprofessional, Gina Robertson, to send all 675 students to the school’s Scholastic book sale this April.

Peoria Elementary, a Title 1 school, where 81 percent of the students receive reduced or free lunch, typically has 33 percent or less book fair participation rate. The $10/student scholarship drive hopes to raise $6,750 so that every student can attend together for the very first time. For every $10 raised, a student will be able to purchase $20 worth of books because the sale is buy one get one free. Each student will choose their own books and have them for the very crucial summer break.

“Book ownership and the ability to personally select them is an exciting opportunity for a child,” said Robertson. “We hope the partnerships with our local 501’s[non-profit] and our outreach to the community make this possible for our students. We invite any community member or organization to help us meet this challenge.”

Non-profit participants at this meeting included representatives from: The Friends of the Peoria Public Library, The Peoria Sunset Lions, The Friends of the Sun City Library, The Arrowhead Kiwanis, The Peoria Police Officer’s Association Charities, The Peoria Firefighter’s Charities, the Peoria Elementary Parent Teacher Student Association, the Sunshine Angels and the North Peoria Rotary. Zuri’s Circle, a local non-profit, although not at the meeting, has also joined in the effort to raise funds for the Sponsorship program.
