Desert Hills resident arrested on animal cruelty charges
Staff Report~ 2/25/2015
DESERT HILLS – Local homeowner Andrea Mikkel was arrested on Feb. 19 on multiple charges of animal cruelty and neglect.
Last month, Maricopa County Sheriff’s detectives found over 100 animals living in deplorable conditions on Mikkel’s property. Two zebras were among the animals found at the home. Other animals included multiple cats, dogs, horses, and birds.
Officers questioned Mikkel when the animals were discovered on the property. She had a medical emergency and was transported to the hospital instead of being arrested that night. Now, she has been formally arrested on animal cruelty charges that may result in jail time.
MCSO encourages anyone who is aware of a case of animal cruelty or neglect to contact the county Animal Crimes Investigation Unit at (602) 876-1681.
