Cultivating Culture

Shea Stanfield

French Author, Andre Maurois wrote, “Art is an effort to create, beside the real world, a more humane world.”  Cultivating Culture was the inspiration for a small group of artists eight years ago.  They were gathered on the back porch of Michelle Williams’ home to discuss how to promote the vibrant art community of Fountain Hills, as well as, promote their creative culture to a broader audience.

Recognizing that creative expression is the heart of any thriving community culture the conversation centered on a plan to make art, and the artists who create it, more accessible to everyone. This could be accomplished by artists opening their home studios, once a year, to those who wanted a “close-up and personal” view of the process of creating in a number of mediums.

A small group of dedicated individuals made the first move to introduce this concept to the Fountain Hills Community, as we say, “The rest was history.”  Today, the annual Tour d’Artistes Studio Tour and Sale has steadily grown into one of the area’s most anticipated and attended events of the spring season.

This year’s seventh annual Tour d’Artistes Studio Tour includes fifteen studios and galleries with over eighty participating artists.  The event is on March 2, 3, and 4, from 10 a.m. to 4p.m., and each day is a free self-guided tour.  The public will have the opportunity to meet local artists, observe demonstrations, and purchase one-of-a-kind pieces for your home, office, garden, or as a gift.  You will find paintings, glass, metal sculpture, digital photography, jewelry, printmaking, mixed media, and fiber art.

If you visit all the studios and galleries on the tour, you will be entered to win a $150.00 gift certificate, toward the purchase of art by one of the participating artists, or an original art chair.
